Esquire Premieres Our Song: Buskers Cover New York State of Mind

The Noise Beneath the Apple® (TNBTA), a multi-media project that strives to legitimize the profession of busking, today partnered with Esquire Magazine to premiere a one-of-a-kind musical collaboration that honors street musicians and the city of New York. 30 of NYC’s buskers, who were featured in the project’s self-titled 200-page Award Winning limited edition art-style book, recently came together at Grand Street Recording in Brooklyn, NY to record a version of Billy Joel's "New York State of Mind." Violins, musical saw, cello, accordion, beatbox, stunning vocals and more blend together to create this unique, six-plus minute cover. The song was arranged, produced and mixed by recording artist Keaton Simons.

The Noise Beneath the Apple® art book includes high quality photographs and intimate stories from 35 groundbreaking musicians in New York City’s underground music scene, as well as an 11-track vinyl record of original music from some of the participants, mastered by Academy Award-winning engineer Reuben Cohen. After the book’s release last year, author Heather Jacks put the idea out to the participants to record a New York-centric song. “The response was overwhelming and the song choice was unanimous,” she says. “According to these musicians, who make their living on the streets of New York City every day, Billy Joel’s ‘New York State of Mind’ captures the spirit of the city, and speaks to their hearts and souls as no other song does.”

On this particular endeavor, TNBTA® has also partnered with Sweet Relief Musicians Fund, a 501C3 nonprofit charity whose mission is to provide financial assistance to all types of career musicians who are struggling to make ends meet while facing illness, disability, or age-related problems. 100% of the proceeds from the “New York State Of Mind” downloads will be donated to Sweet Relief Musicians Fund.
