Once in a while, an artist comes along; whose voice elicits goose bumps at first note. You can feel the tingle begin, slowly working its way from the inside out, and then for no apparent reason, you find yourself lost in the music. Tears may prick the corners of your eyes and your mind wanders over the lyrics in contemplation. Your heart follows of its own accord. Cole Williams is such an artist. She has loudly (and justifiably) been declared a brilliant artist already in her young career, and Shit Don’t Get Happened, her latest single will do nothing to disabuse you of that reality. This is her spiritual journey, and if you don’t want to go—get off the train now; because Cole is doing her own thing, a thing that is new, creative and mesmerizing, and it shows.
The single, which logs in at 3:33, is a soulful, R&B sounding piece that is beautifully layered with piano, lush with harmonic sweetness and soaring vocals. The song is clearly about a love gone wrong; however, the lyrics are delivered with haunting vocals, which are inspiring and honest, healing, thoughtful and insightful, gritty and empowering:
“Don’t forget that I’m a lady, I was built this way…”
According to Cole herself, "I went through a breakup last year, joined a new band, and for the first time in my adult life, began to explore who "Cole" really is - no boyfriend, no lover, just me on my own. So I was back to the beginning, back to me, back to where I always should have been and always should be. I don't write love songs, because for me, they feel whiny and cyclical. I wrote this song because my feelings were hurt. This was my way of having closure from a situation gone wrong. I've never looked back since; the past is in the past and I got an amazing song out of it. In retrospect, the art is always ten times more fulfilling than the man it is about."
Cole Williams has been consistent in delivering strong material and rather than a splashy loud assault of notes, like too many American Idol divas, Cole sings the song and it feels like an overflow of emotion; not ‘It’s show time on the next (insert reality singing contest here’)
If you haven't met the music of Cole Williams yet, that's OK--because you will. And once you do, you can join me on the Cole Williams train, right up in the front seats.
